Preventive Care

Coronary check up

Many illnesses are present before symptoms appear. The body first tries to "repair" itself before "signalling" that something is wrong. It is common for symptoms to appear only in advanced stages of illness, at which point, the illness is often difficult to cure.

Undertaking a medical examination, even when symptoms are not present, offers the best chance to identify and successfully treat illness. A coronary check can identify heart and vascular disease in early stages.

Coronary and vascular diseases are responsible for over 50% of deaths in Germany.

Compulsory medical insurance covers the costs of a health check every two years for persons over 36 years of age. This includes a medical consultation, physical examination, blood tests for glucose and cholesterol and a urine examination. A comprehensive health check can uncover health risks and illness in their earliest stages.

In addition, various technical examinations can be undertaken to identify illness that is not identified through a basic medical consultation and physical examination. Coronary heart disease (clogging of the heart's arteries, which can lead to heart attack) and other heart diseases are often first identified through a technical examination. For half of all patients with coronary heart disease, the first noticeable symptom is a heart attack. This is too late!

We recommend that our patients undertake technical examinations in addition to the basic health check covered by compulsory medical insurance. The costs for these examinations are at private expense. However, given the risks at stake the relatively small outlay is well worth it.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An ECG can identify symptoms unique to patients suffering from coronary heart disease, for example, scarring after a heart attack, changes in blood flow to the heart and unusual changes in heart rhythm.

Stress Electrocardiogram (“stress test”)

Problems with blood flow to the heart and changes in heart rhythm are often first identifiable during physical exertion. A stress electrocardiogram can identify these changes, enabling early treatment for coronary heart disease, and thereby significantly reducing the risk of heart attack.

Doppler Ultrasound

The Doppler ultrasound is on the cutting edge of medical development and its value can't be overestimated. With the help of the Doppler ultrasound, thickening of the arterial walls in the carotid artery can be identified in the earliest stages. It is also possible to identify arteriosclerosis (also known as atheromatous plaque/ artery disease) on the vascular wall. An early diagnosis of arteriosclerosis allows effective treatment to minimize the chance of secondary illnesses, notably heart attack or stroke.

Echocardiography

Echocardiography is an ultrasound examination of the heart. It allows dynamic imaging of the heart muscles, cardiac valve, aorta and pericardial sac. It is possible to identify irregularities in heart function, including thickening of or damage to the heart muscle, scarring of the heart muscle, pericardial effusion or aortic aneurysms. The echocardiogram is for these reasons one of the most important tools in the diagnosis of heart disease.
