Dementia

Dementia is a common illness among the aged. Often the fist signs of dementia are overlooked or not taken seriously. Especially when detected early, it is possible to help demented patients and to provide support to their loved ones.

Be aware of the early signs of dementia.

These include:
» Recent experiences or events are easily forgotten.
» Difficulty in finding the 'right' words.
» Regularly misplacing objects at home.
» Failing to remember well known routes.
» Failing to pay close attention to personal hygiene and dress.
» Uncharacteristic behaviour (eg: quickly angered or aggressive behaviour).
» Increased attention to comfort and reduced physical activity.
» Suspected depression.

If dementia is suspected, Marianum offers a neuropsychological test as part of a dementia examination. This test enables the detection of dementia in high risk groups. The test (known as the CERAD test) is used world wide and is a recognised test for the diagnosis of Dementia.

The test is administered by one of our specially trained Medical Assistants and takes around an hour to complete. The results are analysed by Dr Florian Wertenauer, who is a clinician and researcher specialising in Geriatric Psychiatry.

If dementia is diagnosed in a patient, the exact type of the illness must be determined. There are a number of different manifestations of dementia, the most common of which are Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. In some cases, dementia can be the result of another illness, such as hypothyreoid disease, which can be easily treated. In order to determine the underlying cause of the dementia, additional physical examinations are undertaken and an appropriate treatment plan is developed, including medication and cognitive training. We also look at ways to ensure that family or loved ones have access to support and assistance.

The fee of € 75.00 for the CERAD-Test is not covered by compulsory medical insurance and must be privately borne.

Please feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about dementia with us openly. We are standing-by to provide advice and assistance. Remember, the earlier the illness is diagnosed the more effective the treatment!
